Outdoor Learning
Outdoor learning supports the development of healthy and active lifestyles by offering children opportunities for physical activity, freedom and movement, and promoting a sense of well-being.
Outdoor learning gives children contact with the natural world and offers them experiences that are unique to outdoors, such as direct contact with the weather and the seasons.
Playing and learning outside also helps children to understand and respect nature and their environment whilst enhancing their problem-solving skills and nurturing their creativity, as well as providing rich opportunities for their developing imagination, inventiveness and resourcefulness.
Anyone who takes a child outdoors will regularly see the enjoyment and sense of wonder and excitement that is generated when children actively engage with their environment.
On this page, you will find outdoor learning activities and idea that can be easily adapted and tried at home. Many activities are open ended and are child led.
Some activities can be done as a one off and are linked directly to the primary national curriculum. Other information pages are based around particular topics. They contain links to useful websites and can be used by children to create entire projects on a topic of their particular interest.
